Title: Blogger
Reports to: Director of Content
Summary:
Tonic, the leading "good news" site and media company focused on the good things that happen around the world each day, has a unique opportunity for a blogger to join our content team. First and foremost, you'll be a sharp writer who's on top of the day's news and able to crank out quick posts to our site. Secondarily, you'd better have a wicked sense of humor -- it should be built into your DNA (and in your writing). Perhaps more importantly, you'll be more flexible than Gumby and able to travel on a moment's notice. Based in Mountain View, CA, or New York, NY, Tonic will provide the resources, team and vision to allow the right candidate to thrive and make a difference in the world.
Description:
Tonic's blogger will be tasked primarily with posting "live" content to the Tonic site. You'll rarely be breaking news, but we do want someone to be on top of the news, and turning out relevant and short blog posts for our site day and night. Additionally, you're going to be racking up frequent flier miles by traveling with Tonic's leadership team, and blogging about what you see while on various adventures. A look at Tonic's board of creators and advisory board will give you some idea of the kinds of people you'll meet in this job. You'll be expected to handle yourself in a professional manner, but while having fun and all the while looking for angles you can write up for the site. Your copy and blog posts will be smart, sharp, witty, engaging and, most importantly, impeccably clean. While you'll often be on duty and working with the company's management, you'll report to the editorial team and will be part of the site's editorial process. We want someone who's creative and with lots of ideas. Your work and input will help us shape this role to make it the most effective it can be. You should also be familiar with blogging platforms such as WordPress, able to take decent photos and work with those images, and even know your way around a video camera. You're going to work hard in this role and at times sleep may be limited, but it'll be rewarding and could be one of the most unique opportunities in the blogging world.
Skills & experience:
- BA/BS degree in Journalism or related equivalent experience
- Professional writing experience with clips to prove it, or experience managing your own well-read blog. Experience with newsgathering and reporting techniques are a plus.
- A good editorial eye -- know what is newsworthy and what's not. Know how to write a good headline.
- Be literate in current events and pop culture. Awareness of topics, personalities and news related to philanthropy and charity is a plus.
- Be all over social media. Be prolific on services like Twitter or other micro-blogging platforms.
- Have nerves of steel around celebrities, and have the ability to intelligently interview VIPs.
- Hands-on experience with basic HTML
- Understanding of SEO
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work quickly in an evolving environment
- Proficiency with MS Office software
- Experience with various content management systems and blogging tools (i.e. WordPress or similar)
- Photography skills and image editing software (i.e. Photoshop). Experience, and multimedia production including audio/video content creation is also a plus.
- Sense of humor absolutely required.
- Ability to travel is necessary. You'll be on the road a lot, particularly spending late nights in New York City, among other places.
This position offers competitive salary, benefits, and the chance to change the world. It is a full-time position located in either Mountain View, CA, or New York, NY
